On the afternoon of 26 October 2015, Department of Foreign Affairs held a meeting with Ms. Portia Stratton – Director of Mines Advisory Group (MAG) Vietnam and Mr. Harry Murphey McCloy – Mines Advisor of the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement (WRA) – US Department of State. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Hoang Xuan Tan – Director of Department of Foreign Affairs.

 

MAG has implemented the UXO clearance project in Quang Binh since 2003 and over the past 12 years of operation, MAG has detected, collected and processed more than 86.000 bombs, mines and explosives with the total imbursement of over $14 million, in which WRA is one of the main sponsors for the project.

At the meeting, Director of Foreign Affairs, Director of MAG Vietnam and Mr. Murphey McCloy discussed about the WRA’s continued funding for MAG’s operation in UXO clearance; the calling on Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) for implementing the project on survey and building database in UXO clearance; the Golden West Humanitarian Foundation (GWHF)’s training on capacity building in demining for the Provincial Explosive Ordnance Disposal units in the coming time, etc.

Within the framework of his trip to Quang Binh, Mr. Harry Murphey McCloy also made a fieldtrip visit to MAG’s operation in An Ninh and Vinh Ninh communes, Quang Ninh district in order to check and evaluate the effectiveness of MAG Quang Binh’s operation. He appreciated the professionalism and effectiveness that MAG Quang Binh has made in its operation; and close collaboration between MAG and local governments in mine actions.

 

On this occasion, the Director of Foreign Affairs sent his thanks to MAG and WRA sponsor for their support in UXO clearance in Quang Binh, which has made contribution to the war remediation in the province in recent years, and expressed his hope to continue to receive further supports from the US government and MAG in near future.
