In the afternoon of March 11, 2026, at the Provincial People’s Committee headquarters, Mr. Hoang Xuan Tan, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee, chaired a meeting with a delegation from Joint Agency Task Force Operation Sovereign Borders of Australian Border Force, led by Ms. Natasha O’Farrell, Deputy Commander. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Thai Huu Lieu, Deputy Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs, along with representatives of relevant provincial departments, agencies, and units.

At the meeting, on behalf of the provincial leadership, Vice Chairman Hoang Xuan Tan provided an overview of the socio-economic development of Quang Tri Province, as well as its potentials, advantages, and development orientations for the coming period.

The Vice Chairman also noted that citizens of Quang Tri currently travel abroad for various purposes, including employment, study, tourism, and family visits. Of these, more than 37,000 workers are employed overseas under fixed-term contracts, and over 1,500 students are studying abroad. Despite these positive developments, illegal brokerage activities and the risk of irregular migration remain concerns. In response, the province has implemented a range of measures to strengthen management and strictly handle violations related to irregular migration.

In parallel with these efforts, the provincial government has also focused on developing and proposing livelihood programs and projects aimed at creating jobs and increasing incomes for local residents, particularly young workers. These initiatives are intended to gradually reduce the need for overseas migration, especially irregular migration.

Looking ahead, the provincial leadership expressed its hope that Australia will continue to enhance information exchange, share experience, and provide technical support to the province in migration management, the prevention of irregular migration, and combating human trafficking. The province also proposed support for capacity-building and training for local officials, increased community awareness-raising activities, and stronger connections with international organizations, including livelihood support initiatives, in order to promote safe, orderly, and regular migration.

Speaking at the meeting, Ms. Natasha O’Farrell expressed her appreciation for the warm and respectful reception extended by the leaders of the Provincial People’s Committee and the departments and agencies of Quang Tri Province. She noted that the project “Community Communication to Prevent Irregular Maritime Migration from Vietnam to Australia” has been implemented since 2014 by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Vietnam in coordination with relevant partners, with funding from the Australian Department of Home Affairs. The project is carried out in several coastal provinces of Vietnam where there have been cases of irregular migration to Australia by boat, including Quang Tri Province.

Ms. Natasha O’Farrell commended the effective coordination and implementation of the project by agencies and partners in Quang Tri Province, which has contributed to raising public awareness of the risks and consequences of irregular migration. In the coming period, the Joint Agency Task Force Operation Sovereign Borders of Australian Border Force will continue to work with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Vietnam and relevant provincial agencies and localities in Quang Tri to maintain and expand the project’s activities.
